Youth sports photography - 11/09/2003
Do any of you know the legal issues of putting minors photos on the web? Ther seems to be many sites that sell action sports photos. Do they get permission to post the photos?

Legally, you can post pictures of people if they are in a public location, properly dressed, and it is not for profit.
If you want to use a picture for profit you have two choices.
1. Have the subjects sign an release form.
2. Pay talent to pose for you.
There is a good book called "Legal Handbook for Photographers" that spells out the details of this.

My contract for youth sports photography includes a clause that the signators are authorized to release all rights to the photographer. Similar to a model release except for the age of legal consent and parent/guardian line.

The laws differ from state to state and from country to country. If you want to be acting within the laws that govern you then you should contact a lawyer and not depend on heresay from the internet. Just my $.02
